2009 Honda Element Driving Experience

Honda's crossover sport utility vehicle Element is always known for its car-like driving characteristics. The 2009 Element is equipped with a 2.4-liter i-VTEC inline-four-cylinder engine same as its predecessors, but for the current year the engine makes 166 horsepower and 161 pound-feet of torque. It comes with either a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission. Element models are available in both two-wheel and four-wheel drive. The two-wheel drive models get an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 20 miles per gallon in the city and 25 miles per gallon on the highway with the automatic transmission, while four-wheel drive models get 18 miles per gallon in the city and 23 miles per gallon on the highway, regardless of transmission.
The 2009 Element LX model is only available with automatic transmission, while both EX and SC models can be equipped with either automatic or manual gearbox. SC models get a stiffer suspension, a faster steering ratio, a lowered ride-height and 18-inch wheels. The five-speed manual transmission features a lightweight and rigid aluminum die-cast housing and multi-cone synchronizers used on first through fourth gears contribute to a smooth, fluid shift feel while reducing throw distances. The five-speed automatic transmission delivers exceptional smoothness, economy and intuitive shift points. And inside the car, the instrument panel-mounted shift lever facilitates quick, direct gear changes.
